“It’s about prevention,” Simenc said.

It’s also about prevention for the other half of his business. That would be the so-called “baby proofing” of the homes of new parents.

No doubt, infants and small children can get into big trouble around the house in ways people don’t even think of.

Some of the keys for baby proofers include latching cabinet doors where cleaning solutions, medications, cutlery and plastic bags are; putting safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs; and removing slippery throw rugs where mom or dad could fall with baby in hand.

Some other key baby protections include window latches so babies can’t fall from upper stories; bracing furniture so if a small child starts climbing he doesn’t pull the bookcase or dresser on himself; getting dangling cords or electrical devices out of harm’s way to prevent electrical shock; putting fences around the spa or pool, and putting spacing between balcony or deck railings so the baby can’t fall through.

Denise Ganot of Menlo Park, mother of a “very mobile” 9-month- old girl, recently put up a safety gate at the top and bottom of her stairs and now has peace of mind.

“We have a steep staircase, and I feel a lot better now,” Ganot said.

Simenc’s business is “poised to grow significantly” as it’s in its eighth year and beginning to pick up more and more word-of- mouth business, he noted.

He charges about $80 per hour for an initial one-hour to 11/2- hour consultation to take a detailed look at the house. Most of his jobs range from $500 to $1,000 for both seniors and baby proofing.

Some of the recommendations don’t involve spending much money. Simenc urges bringing smoke detectors up to date and moving furniture slightly to cover electrical cords to keep the baby from biting cords.
